Diving in the Red Sea is a pleasurable experience. The sea is an enjoyable 81°C in the months of July to October and so a shortie wetsuit is all you need. During the winter, you might need a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit. Visibility is generally good and ranges from 65 to 200 feet. The marine life is abundant and you will see turtles, snappers, barracudas, lion fish, reef fish, spotted rays as well as colourful coral. Take note that you will have to pay for all Nitrox, you must have diving insurance and a visa. Depending on where you dive, you might have to pay a 5 USD fee levied by the Egyptian government. The government has realised how vulnerable the reefs are and in order to preserve this valuable tourist attraction, they levy a fee to help conserve its infrastructure. This is mandatory on Ras Mohammed, Brothers Island and Zabargad Island. There are rules to observe as well. You mustn't feed the fish, drop litter or wear gloves when diving.

So where's the best place to go diving? The Northern wrecks are the local attraction. Quite a few ships are buried here, including Chrisoula K, Kimon M, Giannis D, Rosalie Moller, El Mina, Carnatic, Ulysees and Kingston. All are easy diving for which you don't need Nitrox. The most interesting though is Thistlegorn, and is the reason why many divers from all over the world come on holidays to Egypt. Sunk during WWll, its cargo can still be seen and consists of army vehicles, weapons, aircraft parts and more - all destined for the 8th Army's campaign in North Africa but never reaching its destination. The good thing about the Thistlegorn is that she is only 30 metres below sea level, so can be reached by all grades of divers. Since she was discovered 10 years ago, over half a million divers have been to explore her.
