If you are trying to decide where to go for a family holiday with young children then Tenerife could be the perfect choice.
First of all its weather means its a great destination winter and summer so you can avoid inflated summer holiday prices and escape the British winter for a week or two of sunshine. Winter temperatures in Tenerife are between 20 and 22° and summer temperatures between 26 and 28°.
Whilst the north of the island is more beautiful and I would definitely recommend the northern towns and resorts to couples, for families the south has more to offer. The two main southern resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas have golden beaches (imported sand), a very wide range of eateries from fast food to nice restaurants and excellent facilities for a whole range of water sports including windsurfing and diving. These two resorts are busy and Play de las Americas in particular is known for its nightlife - perhaps best suited to families with adolescents. Nearby though there are quieter resorts allowing you to benefit from the facilities of these whilst staying in a quieter location.
Whale and dolphin watching tours set out from Los Cristianos and Play de las Americas and are a real treat for children of all ages (and their parents!). Tenerife is the second most important destination in the world for whale watching and lots of different species pass through the deep waters between Tenerife and La Gomera as part of their annual migration. Whale watching tours often set out in glass-bottomed catamarans allowing you to glimpse these wonderful sea-mammals underwater as well as from the deck. Many tours offer buffet lunch and time to swim as part of the tour.
Tenerife has some great theme parks and two particularly good ones are just by Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. These are Loro Parque and Siam Park. Loro Parque is a large animal park with a tree tops adventure where you can walk through the tree-tops on rope bridges with the plants, trees and birds of a tropical jungle all around you. There are also lots of animal shows the Orca show being the highlight. The Orcas can be seen underwater through glass windows onto their pools and there is a show every day. There is also a dolphin show, a sea-lion show and a parrot show.
Siam Park is a giant water park with an oriental flavour. It has the world's largest wave pool and a water ride with a jaw-dropping 28 meter high slide. It also has a very long 'lazy river' allowing you to float tranquilly by the oriental style buildings and planting of the park. The kids will love it - so will you.
As well as these activities there is a model village, pyramids, camel rides and a volcano to make sure your holiday is a success.
